Large 8 vo, 3/4 leather binding of the period with gilt tooling in two lines on spine ' G.T.Bokl´. VERY GOOD. A polemic note of the period in red pencil and in clear hand writting on A.M.´s lengthy note, critical to Buckle´s views on the religion, added at page 498. Chapter one only of this volume was translated by Nikolai Tiblen. Chapters II and III were translated by Bestuzhev-Riumin. Chapters V and VI were translated in association with Elizaveta Grigor´evna Beketova and edited by N.Tiblen. Polemic notes on the role of religion to chapters V and VI of vol. II were written by A. M. [Aleksandr Mikhailov?] Bestuzhev-Riumin, Konstantin Nikolaevich, 1829-1897. Born into a noble family.Graduated from the department of law at Moscow University (1851). In 1865 he became a professor in the subdepartment of Russian history at the University of St. Petersburg, and in 1890 he became an academician. Tibien, after serving in the Crimean War (1853–56), left military service in 1859 and opened a printing shop in St. Petersburg. Tiblen published the first Russian-language editions of several major foreign works, primarily in natural science and philosophy. These included works by F. Guizot, T. B. Macaulay, H. T. Buckle, H. Spencer, J. S. Mill, and J.-J. Rousseau. In 1862, Tibien published the first complete edition of A. S. Griboedov’s Woe From Wit, with illustrations by M. S. Bashilov. In 1868, Tiblen published the periodical collection 'Novye pisateli ' and the journal 'Sovremennoe obozrenie'. In the same year, on the verge of bankruptcy, he went abroad, and his subsequent fate is unknown. A very rare Russian edition of Henry Thomas Buckle´s opus magnum.Volume I was sold out within a very short time and N.L.Tiblen printed the second edition with extended footnotes and corrigenda shortly after.Footnotes and marginalia notes in both volumes consist of ca.33% of Buckle´s printed text. First volume was printed at N.L.Tiblen´s printing shop and the second at P.A.Kulish´s. Buckle´s engraved portrait was very popular among Russian students of the period who liked to pin it on walls in their places of dwelling (the very same way as reproductions of Hemingway´s portraits were pinned by Soviet students in the late 1950s and early 1960s). Engraving was often excised from a number of public and university libraries copies as early as at the date of publication of this book.Copies of the engraving were sold separately by contemporary 'brakers' for a high price, reaching up to 8 rubles already in the 1870s.
