Pierre Jules Théophile Gautier was a French poet, dramatist, novelist, journalist, art critic and literary critic. While Gautier was an ardent defender of Romanticism, his work is difficult to classify and remains a point of reference for many subsequent literary traditions such as Parnassianism, Symbolism, Decadence and Modernism. He was widely esteemed by writers as diverse as Balzac, Baudelaire, the Goncourt brothers, Flaubert, Proust and Oscar Wilde. He became very popular in Russia already in 1870s.

'Le capitaine Fracasse' (1863) was one of the most loved novels by Russian and Soviet children and young readers. The book was translated into Russian for the first time in 1895.

New translation was made in 1930 by Natalia Grigoryevna Kasatkina (1902-1986), a prominent literary translator from French and German. Her main translation projects from the French: Theophile Gautier’s Captain Fracas (1930), Maupassant’s Life (1948), Victor Hugo’s The Last Day of a Condemned Man (1953), Romaine Rolland’s Jean Christoff (1956). From the German: Heinrich Heine, Heinrich Mann’s The Chief and Henry Quatre (1939), Goethe’s The Sorrows of Young Werther (1950), Leon Feuchtwanger’s Jud Seuss (1964).
